Marketing in Life SciencesLausanne, 03.03.2009 - 05.03.2009Second Module of the EPFL Certificate in Management of Medtech, Biotech, Pharma Ventures
Context
Marketing in the life science field is very different than in consumer industries. The industry’s products -- devices, drugs and diagnostics -- affect and alter health. Products have rigid specifications, long development cycles and heavy regulation contributing to a high hurdle rate. Human testing is required for drugs and more complex devices and some diagnostics. Side effects discovered after drugs or devices are marketed may cause the manufacturer to re-label with restrictions or even withdraw products from the market. New products often challenge existing clinical practice and require physicians to adapt to new paradigms. While the consumer is the end-user, the physician is usually responsible for the consumer’s choice and the consumer looks to insurers to reimburse. All of these factors point to a complex set of marketing conditions and the need to optimize the marketing mix.
